Utah’s Division of Waste Management and Radiation Control (DWMRC) in the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), is leading the way in a Statewide Recycling Data Initiative. The Division has just released a Utah Recycling and Solid Waste Facility Locator Map - an interactive map that assists the public in locating recycling, solid waste, and used oil collection center facilities.
URA staff and board met recently with Utah's Division of Waste Management and Radiation Control in the Department of Environmental Quality to learn about their new Recycling Data Initiative and Interactive Facility Locator Map. This project will help Utah establish some baseline data on how much we're recycling as a state and where those materials are going. And the facility locator map is a great new resource to help us all find locations to take materials that will properly recycle them. We're so excited to see this increase in recycling transparency being shared with all of Utah!
Project Overview
The Statewide Recycling Data Initiative aims to collect and share data on the amount of solid waste generated, recycled, and composted annually in the state of Utah. This data will be made publicly available – a crucial step in understanding Utah’s recycling performance and identifying areas for improvement. As the initiative continues to evolve and recycling data is collected, the map will be further developed to share county and statewide recycling metrics. This data is currently being collected from landfills, recycling facilities, composting facilities, combustion with energy recovery facilities, and other food management facilities such as anaerobic digestion facilities.
What's the Goal?
The goal of the Statewide Recycling Data Initiative is to provide user-friendly tools that will assess recycling performance by collecting and sharing state-wide data on the amount of waste generated, composted, and recycled. This toolkit includes an interactive map to help the public easily locate the nearest recycling and waste management facilities.
